Backroads Day 1: ~30 bike miles, Asolo, Hotel Villa Cipriani
We rode ~30 bike miles with a cumulative elevation gain of 1,420 feet.
We had a leisurley breakfast at the hotel in the morning, met two of our
fellow Backroads group members (Jeff and Belinda), and then took taxis to the
Bassano del Grappa
train station where we met the rest of our
Backroads
group and our guides (Gabriele and Jeff) at 11:45 a.m.
We shuttled ~10km to agriturismo
il magicorto
(a bed & breakfast)
for a scrumptious lunch.
Then it was time to prepare our bikes, listen to the safety talk and the route rap, and
get ready to ride.
We headed out on our ride just after 2:30 p.m.
The earlier route was fairly flat, and we rode through small
commmunities and past many small farms.
Our first stop (at ~4:45 p.m.) was near the top of a hill at
Canova's Gpysoteca.
Antonio Canova lived from
1755-1822
and was a very prolific sculptor.
Some of bailed out at various points along the route,
the drenching rain from the thundershower made the roads slick and the visibility with (sun) glasses limited.
Ben managed to ride the "long" option and arrived at
Hotel Villa Cipriani
(near the top of a hill) at 6:45 p.m., long after the rest of the group had arrived.
We enjoyed a nice late meal, sharing a
2005 Jermann Vintage Tunina (Bianco Venezia Giulia)
and a
2003 Serafina & Vidotto Pinot Nero (pinot noir, from the Veneto).
The Pinot Nero was quite a delight!
Ben also had a taste of
2005 Bonaventura Maschio Prime Uve (grappa).
It was clear and quite tame by grappa standards, but it didn't have the elegance of
the
1999 Berta Tre Soli Tre grappa.
We had a great time talking to our guides and fellow riders, and didn't turn in until 12:30 a.m.
