Auckland -> Kerikeri -> Paihia, Bistro 40
Depart: Auckland 11:30am Arrive: Kerikeri 12:15pm Flight: 2682
We got up, packed, ate breakfast at the Metropolis, after which the kids played in Albert Park
until our taxi arrived. We flew from Auckland to Kerikeri on a Beech 1900D (two engine turboprop), passing
over the Metropolis as well as the Sky Tower on our flight north. We took another taxi to Paihia, about
24km from Kerikeri.
We had lunch at
Only Lips,
passable but nothing to write home about. We had the
Marlborough Deutz
methode traditionale sparkling wine. Our verdict? Deutz does a better job in Napa Valley.
The kids played in the sand and surf while Lisa when for a run, and
then we walked to
Bistro 40
for dinner. The restaurant was bright and clean, and the menu looked quite nice, and we had heard a good report
from a couple from New York City staying at our lodgings. But the service was extremely slow, several dishes
were over-salted, and Lisa's tuna was overcooked. And our waitress was mystified that we should find fault
with her service. Curious. We had the 1998
Morton Estate
Hawkes Bay Chardonnay (Black Label). The nose was great --
it could easily have been a Kistler Chardonnay! But it lacked a "middle" and the finish was weak. This seems to
be the characteristic of New Zealand wines, as if the fruit simply does not ripen enough, and they don't reduce the
yield sufficiently to concentrate the flavors.
