Mount Cook -> Dunedin, Moeraki Boulders, St. Kilda Beach, The Palms
We managed to get up and on the road before 9:00am, stopped for a quick breakfast in Omarama, and then drove on
to the Moeraki Boulders. We got out, walked on the beach, and enjoyed these surprising globular rocks. Then it
was back in the car for the rest of the drive to Dunedin. It was still a holiday, but we found a wine bar that was
open for lunch, and then found our lodgings for the night and checked in. Olivia was super helpful, finding dinner
reservations for us and rescheduling our penguin viewing for 6:45pm the following day.
We drove a short distance to a playground, but it was quite windy, so we continued on to St. Kilda beach, where the
kids had fun playing in the sand. Then it was back to the bed and breakfast to get ready for dinner, and we drove
to
The Palms
and had a very nice meal, accompanied by a 2001
Quartz Reef
Pinot Noir from Central Otago
recommended by our waiter. At NZ$45 it was quite inexpensive, but had more fruit than almost any other NZ wine
we had tasted on our trip. Our only quibble is that it could have benefited from more time in newer oak casks.
