The Portugeuse government began refurbishing former palaces in 1942 and turning them
into hotels, calling them Pousada. The Dona Maria I was refurbished in 1999, and we
had room 212, on the second floor, looking directly out on the street and across
to the Pal[a accent on top, sweeping up from left to right]cio de Queluz.
After checking in and dropping our bags, we took a short walk, then showered and
dressed for dinner at Cozinha Velha, which is housed across the street in a wing
of the Palacio.
